What is feng shui?

Feng shui is about creating and maintaining balance and harmony and living in harmony with your environment. Feng shui works with the relationship between people and places and the effect living and working environments have on their well-being. It's about making a conscious connection between the environment and the inner self. This includes understanding that our homes and workspaces mirror our subconscious beliefs and are a source of subliminal programming.

Feng shui helps 'decode' the inner world as it is expressed within these spaces in the design choices and symbolism we use. Through this we're able to recognise aspects of our lives expressed in our exterior space. Making changes in our exterior space has the effect of re-programming subliminal messages that cause blockages in our lives. Therefore, changing the exterior space facilitates a positive shift in our inner world, bringing us back to balance and harmony.

Applying feng shui to your surroundings allows you to harness opportunities to improve every aspect of your life. It focuses on chi (life essence) and is a way of understanding how it moves in us, our surroundings and how the chi of our buildings, their interiors and our environment affect us. Once we understand how chi is affecting us we can then use enhancers and cures to weaken negative energies and strengthen positive energies to bring balance and harmony into our lives, health, career, business, relationships, homes and gardens. In simple terms, Chi is the life force essence present in all things in the universe. It is in constant flow, even traveling through solid substances.

Schools of Feng Shui

Where possible I incorporate the following schools of feng shui, to help create the best results for my clients:

  • Flying Stars – is a complex, accurate and the only dynamic feng shui school because it takes into account the influence of time on a building. It is used to identify where the negative and positive energies are located within a premises and includes building and annual flying stars to help fine tune suggested recommendations.  
     
  • 4 Pillars of Destiny – a highly accurate form of Chinese Astrology that can indicate what is happening with individual occupants of a home and staff of a business. Luck Pillars are the cycles of energy that a person comes into over the course of their lives. Known as transits in Western Astrology, they depict what the energy will be like for the specific individual for a particular 10 year period and show when times will flow more smoothly or will be more challenging. It shows the potentials we can achieve during our life, life themes such as relationships, career preferences, health, creativity, money and resources and can help us negotiate the cycles we are currently experiencing and how future cycles may affect us. It has special emphasis to feng shui as a person's favourable elements can be discovered which is important when recommendations are made and you want to choose colours, furnishings, decor or even the location of a house.  
       
  • Form School – is visual observation of both interior and exterior. It analyses the land, its contours and the placement of water. The inside of a building must also be considered, focusing significantly on the placement of furniture. 
     
  • Bagua – is used to identify the location of the different aspects that you wish to improve and strengthen, for example career, health, prosperity, education, and to identify the type of chi that comes with the different compass directions. 
     
  • 8 Mansions – identifies the lucky and unlucky locations and directions for both premises and individual people. Where possible recommendations are made for the best place to locate beds, reception, office desks, etc.

Feng Shui Tips for the Home

When considering the overall Feng Shui of your home, the entrance should be a top priority as the energy entering this part of your home is the single most important factor in determining the quality of success you experience in life.  If you are building a new home I recommend speaking to a qualified Feng Shui Consultant to determine the best position for the entrance to your home. If you are looking to improve the entrance to your existing home there are some Feng Shui tips to keep in mind.
 
Tip #1 Ensure there is nothing external blocking or interfering with the energy entering your home. Objects such as trees or large poles and objects with sharp points will prevent the energy entering smoothly into your home.
 
Tip #2 To improve the flow of energy and for the best possible Feng Shui in your home, it is best to have the entrance area spacious rather than constricted. So remove all clutter surrounding the entrance to your home and allow the energy to enter freely.
 
Tip #3 How you light your entrance is important in regard to achieving good Feng Shui in your home. A well lit entry is more conducive to circulating your positive chi than a dark and dingy one.
 
Tip #4 If you are building a new home try to avoid having the entrance directly opposite a set of stairs leading to an upper level. This will support the chi and stimulate the flow more freely throughout the entry level of your home.

Feng Shui and Clutter
Clutter has two faces. It can build up gradually, slowly draining a home or business of its energy and suffocating any who live there, or it may settle in swiftly like a toxic plague infecting your home or business with stagnant energy. Clutter makes it difficult to relax and can limit the peace and enjoyment you feel while trying to unwind. Clutter problems range from small heaps of magazines or DVDs, to piles of junk mail littered across every table top, to piles of unwanted clothing spilling out of your wardrobe and in boxes and piles in your spare room.
 
Cluttered homes and businesses are mentally draining. From a feng shui perspective, energy is stagnant inside these buildings preventing energies from reacting together as intended. With stagnant energy plaguing the home or business, proper growth and development cannot happen. Clutter is the cause of much anger, frustration and self loathing and if you eradicate it from your home, you will remove a serious block from your life.
